Maurice Godwin's Author Guild Profile

Maurice Godwin, Ph.D., specializes in investigative psychological, crime scene analysis, missing persons, and geographic profiling of abductors and serial murderers. In this capacity, he has aided local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and is a frequent commentator for the media in high-profile cases. Dr. Godwin has appeared on numerous national TV shows, including Greta Van Susteren, Hardball, Connie Chung Tonight, Fox News Live, and news segments on MSNBC and CNN.

He accurately profiled the Washington, D.C., sniper case. His geographic profile not only defined the area that included the work location of the Baton Rouge serial killer, Derrick Todd Lee, it also predicted where the killer would likely strike next—including the home of the final victim, Carrie Yoder. 

Dr. Godwin's perspective is unique. He started as a beat cop in a small rural town in North Carolina, and was the first American to obtain a Ph.D. in investigative psychology from the University of Liverpool.Dr. Godwin has written a highly regarded textbook Hunting Serial Predators: A Multivariate Approach to Profiling Violent Behavior (Jones & Bartlett, 2008) and the third edition is currently being published. In Search of Derrick Todd Lee: The Internet Social Movement that Made a Difference (2007) was written by another author but focused on Dr. Godwin’s work in the Baton Rouge serial murder case He is also the co-author Slave Master the true crime story of Internet serial killer John Robinson, (Pinnacle 2004) and Tracker: Hunting Down Serial Killers (Perseus Books 2005).

He received his Bachelor's degree from Trevecca Nazarene University in behavioral science, a Master’s Degree in criminology from Indiana State University, one course from having a master’s degree in forensic science from University of Florida, and a PhD from The University of Liverpool in England in investigative psychology. Dr. Godwin has been teaching criminal justice related course for 17 years. He also runs his own trial and forensic consultancy group.He lives in Fayetteville, NC with his wife Helen and their dog Lilly.
